Fewer and fewer people carry cash — and when the service was excellent, the desire to tip is there, but the bills aren't. A Pix QR Code placed on a table, counter or printed on a payment terminal solves this in seconds.

With Pix available 24/7, fee-free and without requiring a dedicated card reader, digital tipping has become the standard in bars, cafés, restaurants, salons, barbershops and even for street musicians. This guide shows you how to create one, where to place it and how to distribute tips among your team.

Why Pix QR beats the physical tip jar

The classic cash tip jar always had one problem: it depends on customers having change. With a Pix QR, customers pay whatever amount they choose, instantly, straight from their phone — and the money arrives immediately.

Requires change Yes No
Available 24/7 Yes Yes
Tracks who paid No Yes (via statement)

How to create a Pix tip QR on Code2Scan

Step by step

  1. Go to the Code2Scan Pix QR generator.
  2. Fill in the fields:
    • Pix key: CPF, CNPJ, email, phone or random key of the recipient.
    • Recipient name: appears on the customer's confirmation screen.
    • City: required by the Pix protocol.
    • Amount: leave blank for the customer to choose, or pre-set (e.g. R$ 5.00).
    • Description: "Team tip" or the professional's name.
  3. Click Generate QR Code.
  4. Download as PNG (for printing) or SVG (for large-format editing).
  5. Print and laminate — or display on a tablet screen at the table.

Tip: A blank amount works best in most cases — the customer chooses freely without feeling pressured.

Minimum print size

Print at least 3 cm × 3 cm for reliable scanning at 20–30 cm distance. For restaurant tables, 5 cm is ideal.

Splitting tips among the team

If tips are pooled (salon team, waitstaff), you have two options:

Option 1 — Business Pix key Payment goes to the CNPJ or business account. The manager distributes manually at end of shift, recorded in a spreadsheet.

Option 2 — Individual QRs per employee Each professional has their own Pix QR. The customer scans the QR of the person who served them — money goes directly to that individual. Ideal for barbershops and salons.

Model Advantage Disadvantage
Single business QR Easy to manage Requires manual distribution
Per-employee QR Goes directly to who served More QRs to print and replace

Detailed use cases

Restaurant & bar

Place the QR in a table stand (menu-holder style) or on the printed receipt. Use the description "Dining room team tip". Suggested amount: blank or R$ 5 / R$ 10.

Café & bakery

On the counter, next to the payment terminal. A laminated sticker with the QR and the caption "Enjoyed your visit? Leave a tip for our team via Pix" works very well. See more ideas at QR Code for cafés and bakeries.

Hair salon & barbershop

Individual QR at each stylist's mirror or on their trolley. The customer scans at the end of the service, before going to the register. Check out the guide for QR Code for salons and barbershops.

Valet & delivery riders

A laminated pocket card with the valet's QR. For delivery riders, a sticker on the bag or a small card tucked in with the order.

Live musician

A stand with an A5-printed QR next to the instrument case. Musicians report 40–60 % more earnings compared to cash-only tips.

Making your QR look professional

  • Add the business logo or a Pix icon at the center of the QR.
  • Use your brand colors.
  • Add a caption: "Scan to leave a tip via Pix".
  • Laminate or use an acrylic QR holder — lasts months without wear.

Common mistakes

❌ Wrong Pix key

Test the QR on two or three different phones before large-scale printing. One wrong digit sends money to the wrong person.

❌ Pre-set amount too high

A fixed amount above R$ 20 discourages customers. Leave it blank or use a small suggested value (R$ 5).

❌ QR too small

A 2 cm QR on a shiny surface with light glare won't scan. Minimum 3 cm, matte finish whenever possible.

❌ Recipient name unrecognizable

What appears on the customer's screen is the recipient name. If it looks strange ("J SILVA 87653"), the customer gets suspicious and cancels. Fill in the name exactly as you want it to appear.

❌ Static QR with an outdated key

If the professional leaves or changes their Pix key, a static QR becomes invalid. Use a dynamic QR if you want to update the key without reprinting.

❌ Not testing after lamination

Glossy lamination can interfere with scanning. Use matte finish or test before mounting.

Summary

  1. Create the Pix QR at Code2Scan's generator with the recipient's key and a free amount.
  2. Choose between a single business QR or individual per-employee QRs.
  3. Print at least 3 cm × 3 cm, matte finish.
  4. Place on the table, counter, mirror, menu or the professional's card.
  5. Test on two phones before putting into use.
  6. Replace the QR if the Pix key changes (or use dynamic to update without reprinting).
