Samsung Galaxy phones offer at least six different ways to scan a QR code — yet most users only know one. Whether through the Camera app, Bixby Vision, the Quick Panel shortcut, or straight from the Gallery, each method has its ideal moment.
This guide covers every path, how to enable the scanner when it's turned off by default, what to do when your phone can't scan, and how to check that a link is safe before opening it.
Overview of methods
| Method | Best for | Requires extra app? |
|---|---|---|
| Native Camera (One UI) | General use, fastest | No |
| Bixby Vision | Screen or printed QR | No |
| Quick Panel shortcut | Without opening Camera | No |
| Lock Screen | Quick access, hands busy | No |
| Samsung Internet | QR found while browsing | No |
| Gallery / saved photo | Read QR from screenshot | No |
Method 1 — Native Camera (One UI)
This is the fastest option on most Samsung devices running One UI 2.0 or later.
- Open the Samsung Camera app.
- Point it at the QR Code.
- A yellow banner appears at the top of the screen with the link or content.
- Tap the banner to open.
How to enable QR scanning in the Camera
If no banner appears, the feature may be disabled:
- Inside the Camera app, tap the gear icon (Settings).
- Find "Scan QR codes" or "Read QR codes".
- Toggle it on.
- Go back and point at the QR — the banner should appear.
On older devices (Android 8 or One UI 1.x) this option may not exist. Use Bixby Vision or a third-party app instead.
Method 2 — Bixby Vision
Bixby Vision is Samsung's image-recognition mode. It works well when the regular camera doesn't detect the QR.
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap the Bixby Vision icon (stylized eye) on the top bar.
- Point at the QR Code.
- Bixby identifies it and shows the link — tap to open.
Bixby Vision also works on photos saved in the Gallery (see Method 6).
Method 3 — Quick Panel shortcut
The Quick Panel (notification shade) in One UI can have a direct "QR Code Scanner" shortcut — no need to open the Camera app.
- Pull down the notification shade from the top with two fingers (or swipe down twice).
- Look for the QR Code icon (a square with smaller squares inside).
- Tap it — the camera opens straight into scanner mode.
- Point at the QR and tap the banner.
Adding the shortcut if it's missing
- In the Quick Panel, tap the pencil icon (edit).
- Drag the "QR Code Scanner" tile to the active area.
- Save.
Method 4 — Lock Screen
Some Galaxy devices let you scan without unlocking:
- On the Lock Screen, swipe to the camera icon (bottom-right corner).
- The camera opens in a restricted mode — point at the QR.
- Tap the banner to open the link.
This doesn't work on all models or One UI versions, and depends on your security settings.
Method 5 — Samsung Internet
If you find a QR Code on a webpage while browsing:
- Open Samsung Internet.
- Tap the three lines (menu) > "QR Code Reader".
- Point at the printed QR or another screen.
Method 6 — Read a QR Code from a photo or screenshot (Gallery)
This is the least-known method and incredibly useful: reading a QR Code saved as a screenshot or photo on your phone.
Via Bixby Vision in the Gallery
- Open the Gallery app and tap the photo containing the QR Code.
- Tap the Bixby Vision icon (eye) on the bottom toolbar.
- Bixby detects the QR and shows the link.
- Tap to open.
Via Google Lens
- Open the photo in Gallery.
- Tap the Google Lens icon (if available on the toolbar).
- Lens identifies the QR — tap the link.
Quick comparison: which method to choose?
| Situation | Recommended method |
|---|---|
| Printed QR on product or poster | Native Camera |
| Camera doesn't detect the QR | Bixby Vision |
| Fast access without opening Camera | Quick Panel |
| QR in a saved screenshot | Gallery + Bixby Vision |
| Browsing the web | Samsung Internet |
Security: check the link before opening
Before tapping any QR banner:
- Read the full URL shown on screen.
- Be suspicious of links with odd domains, many hyphens, or words like "secure-login" or "verify-account".
- Never enter passwords or banking details on pages opened from an unknown QR source.
- When in doubt, check our safe URL guide before proceeding.
Common errors
❌ Camera doesn't detect the QR
Check that "Scan QR codes" is enabled in Camera settings (Method 1). On older devices, use Bixby Vision.
❌ Banner disappears too quickly
Keep the phone steady and ensure good lighting. The banner stays while the QR is in frame — move away and back to reactivate.
❌ QR Code is partially cut off in the photo
When photographing a QR to read later, make sure the entire square (including the white margin) is visible. Cropped QR codes won't scan.
❌ Quick Panel shortcut not found
Edit the Quick Panel and drag the "QR Code Scanner" tile to the active area (see Method 3).
❌ Bixby Vision asks for an update
Update the Bixby Vision app from the Galaxy Store before using.
